On this day in 1951, American diplomat Zandra Iona Flemister was born.
Zandra Flemister became the first African American woman to serve as an Secret Service agent when she joined that force in 1974. During her tenure there, she protected the daughters of two U.S. presidents — Susan Ford and Amy Carter.
Femister retired because of early onset Alzheimer’s Disease in 2011, after having served the U.S. Foreign Service for more than 30 years. She died at age 71 on February 21, 2023.
