Phyllis Hightower is proud and excited to announce her intent to campaign for the newly formed Democratic Party House District 149 containing portions of Baldwin, Jones & Bibb Counties.
Phyllis is a former political candidate for House District 143 who was previously endorsed by Chief Deputy Coroner Lonnie Miley. She is a member of the American Art Therapy Association and in the early 90s she served as the first African American Executive Board member of the Georgia Art Therapy Association in Atlanta Georgia.
Phyllis is a retiree from the State of Georgia Dept of Juvenile Justice. During her sixteen years with the department she gained a wealth of knowledge regarding incarceration vs. rehabilitation of which she will use to advocate for second chance programs for youthful offenders.
She is a Jones County High School and Georgia College & State University graduate. After graduating from college she made Baldwin County home for a few years. She later moved to Macon Georgia where she has lived for the past 30 plus years. Phyllis has lived in all three portions of the district and will represent the people well.
She is and has been a well respected provider of mental health services and in 1993 Phyllis opened and operated an Art Therapy private practice in the office of Dr Joseph K.M. Butler M.D. While working in the private sector for Coliseum Psychiatric Hospital she was featured in a news paper advertisement as one of the 25 reasons to choose Coliseum hospital for psychiatric care.
Phyllis knows the need for mental health advocacy in Georgia and she plans to take her wealth of knowledge to the state house.
Phyllis has been a seminar speaker and workshop presenter. Her extensive work in mental health and Art Therapy has not gone unrecognized; she has been featured in the local Georgia Family magazine and the national American Art Therapy Association newsletter highlighting her involvement with Art therapy.
Phyllis is the author of Ten Keys to Avoid Debt and the owner of PHALL Enterprise LLC. She has owned a trucking company, cleaning business and currently an on line clothing store. Phyllis plans to make sure that the voices of small business owners are not ignored.
Phyllis has been involved with community organizations that support the view that your zip code should not limit your value services or representation. She has worked with outreach groups and organization that cloth, feed and provide for the unhoused population.
