One of the most heartening tales of Central Georgia’s resilience and compassion lies in the genesis of the Brookdale Resource Center. It was a chilling wake-up call on December 26th, 2020, when news flooded in about the tragic demise of two homeless individuals due to the harsh winter conditions the day before. The bitter truth that on Christmas Day, these souls perished due to the lack of resources shook us to the core.
In the aftermath of this profound loss, many of us found ourselves pondering how to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. Mayor-elect Lester Miller, known for his unwavering dedication to community welfare, wasted no time in turning this heartbreaking reality into a catalyst for action. Even before officially taking office, he took the lead in establishing the Brookdale Warming Center, offering a safe haven for those vulnerable to the elements.
However, Mayor Miller’s vision extended beyond mere temporary relief. He envisioned a comprehensive support system, one that not only provided immediate aid but also paved the path towards long-term stability and self-sufficiency. It was this foresight that led Mayor Miller to reach out to United Way of Central Georgia to propose that we assume management of the Brookdale Warming Center. This strategic alliance, rooted in a shared commitment to serve the community, heralded a new chapter in the center’s journey.
Today, the Brookdale Resource Center stands as a shining example of community collaboration and compassion. It serves as a beacon of hope for those grappling with homelessness, offering not only warmth and shelter but also a pathway towards a brighter future. Thanks to then Mayor-elect Lester Miller’s visionary leadership, coupled with the steadfast dedication of United Way, what began as a moment of tragedy has been transformed into a story of resilience and hope.
There have been many so many successes stories over the past three years, but one of the former residents I want to introduce you to today is Allan Robinson. Allan was a Brookdale resident who lived at the Center for 52 days before leaving for independent housing. Our caseworkers were able to secure a social security card and other benefits that allowed Allan to be prepared for independent housing. When asked about his experience at Brookdale, Allan specifically addressed the dedicated staff by calling them “Kind, loving, and very, very helpful. Everyone was great. Glory be to God!!!”
Allan is far from being alone. Last month, 131 people – including 40 children – were served by the Brookdale Resource Center. On any given night the center averages 73 guests with a maximum capacity of 90. 12 people graduated from the 90-day program on time in February while 11 others – like Allan – left early for independent housing.
